How Can I Help?
On Monday we will gather for our Annual General Meeting. A time to get updated on a year’s worth of activities, as well as a review of our financials for the year just past and the budget for the year ahead.
One of the other things that you will hear about is changes to the Board and you will note that we still have room for a few more individuals to join us in working to steer the good ship Solel.
One of the things that the nominating committee often hears is: I’m not ready for board work and/or I don’t have enough time, or the skills to contribute in a meaningful way.
I would reply as follows to these comments.
What do you have time for and where do your interests lie? There are many people working ‘backstage’ as it were who contribute in small and large ways to the Solel community.
- Some people fulfil the role of Shamas or Gabbai at services.
- Some people work in the garden.
- There is a person who polishes the silver (the crowns, finials, yads and breastplates) of our Torah scrolls.
- Others act as ushers during High Holiday services.
- Still others teach at Bet Sefer.
- Another group has reinstated the Membership committee.
- Many people provide food for Onegs, Community Lunches and other special events.
- And some cook with Women of Solel.
- Some people volunteer at cGaming (formerly known as Bingo) for the Solel sessions or the Women of Solel sessions.
- Some people come up with ideas and run a one-off program (our recent Karaoke night) or create a small group (create your own tallit or walking in Etobicoke parks).
This is just the beginning of a long list of activities that people participate in, to help our community thrive. For many, taking on one activity is a way to start becoming involved in Solel life that can lead to formal committee work that can potentially lead to joining the Board. Yup, I did have an ulterior motive here.
We are also looking at planning a more formal training program that people can participate in to help them gain the skills they need to contribute in a more meaningful way on the Board. While it was a goal of mine to institute this process this year, somewhere along the way life got in the way, and I ran out of time to make this happen. I’m determined that during my second year it will become a reality.
Additionally, a great way to get involved in Synagogue life, is to participate in events. Showing up for services or Lunch and Learns, or social events, or study classes all lead to a greater connection with Solel and an opportunity for all of us to get together and strengthen the bonds within our Jewish Community. And yes, potentially decide that you might like to help make some of these or other activities happen.
So, I would encourage everyone, young and old, to think about where your strengths and interests lie and find a way to make Solel a bigger part of your life.
