Another New Year

by Ruth Ostrower, December 31, 2025

While the secular New Year of January 1 is very different from Rosh Hashanah (party time vs introspection time), it is still an opportunity when we can sit down and consider how best to move forward into a new year.

Many people make resolutions, but how many actually follow through on them?

Consider the following:

A few weeks ago I was at Solel for Adult Study with the Rabbi – this was the final week of a 4-session course led by Rabbi Englander (Rabbi Emeritus) where we looked at The Biblical Story of the Exodus: What Really Happened? Come January 11 we return to: Unlocking the Wisdom of Jewish Tradition: Reading Reform Responsa with Rabbi Pollack. Dive into the rich tapestry of Jewish thought as we explore how Reform rabbis interpret ancient texts to address contemporary challenges.

Also taking place on that Sunday was the regular Bet Sefer Solel classes spread throughout the sanctuary and the social hall.

In the kitchen, there was the Latke making crew.

And when Bet Sefer ended, the Twisted Camels were rehearsing with the Rabbi in the sanctuary and Monsters and Menchen (with pizza of course) taking place in the social hall.

In other words, many different activities taking place throughout the building that could appeal to people of different ages and stages.

So, if you’re looking for a New Year’s Resolution that is achievable, consider joining us at Solel for one of the many activities taking place. Come in person if you can, or join one of the many activities that takes place on-line if that is more suitable.

Unwind with a Shabbat evening or morning service, then stay for the Oneg. Come study with the Rabbi, or attend one of our many Lunch and Learn Sessions. In person is a great way to connect with other Soleniks and provides the opportunity to meet new people. If that doesn’t work for you, then nearly all of our worship and learning opportunities are also available online.

Read the book of the month and join the online Book Club with Arliene. Next up, on February 8,
Israel – A Simple Guide To The Most Misunderstood Country On Earth by Noa Tishby.

If music is your bag, consider joining the Twisted Camels – musicians and singers are all welcome. Let the Rabbi know if you’re interested.

Once a quarter Women of Solel gather in the kitchen for cooking and conversation – there’s always room for one more.

For the outdoors types, in January John and Brenda Lewsen will be leading the second of a series of walks in Etobicoke.

Looking for some fun, then plan to join us on Saturday, February 7 as we end Shabbat with a Havdalah service followed by Karaoke with our own DJ Vicki Stacey. Family and friends are welcome. Just RSVP to the office by January 31 so we can ensure there is enough Pizza and other assorted snacks for everyone. Donations in support of Solel are appreciated.

For many, February is associated with Valentine’s Day and so this month we will be hosting the Ketubahs of Love Art Exhibit. On Sunday, February 8 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. there will be a festive reception with an opportunity to view and learn about the many variations in Ketubah Art designs. A variety of events will take place throughout the month, with more information to follow. If you would be willing to participate by allowing us to display your ketubah, please contact the Solel office or click on this link to provide some information to let us know! We’re also looking for volunteers to help with organizing and setting up the events. If you’d be willing to help, please contact the Solel office or Miriam Schoeman.

All this to say – we truly have something for everyone. Keep an eye out for your weekly and monthly Shammas and check out the many options for joining us for a wide variety of opportunities for community, prayer, study and fun.

I hope to see you soon.
