So Little Time, So Much To Do…

Our first Invite Your Neighbour service since pre-Covid was a rousing success. Roughly 125 people gathered to share in the joy of an Erev Shabbat service. Attendees came from several area churches and mosques, representing a variety of Christian, Muslim and Bahai congregations. I was so pleased to see so many Solelniks come out to welcome our interfaith community into our home. Many thanks to all of the many, many people who made this event happen. As noted in the Shammas, the list is long and everyone contributed, each in their own way, to make this a truly amazing experience for all.

Last Saturday, a dozen people participated in the first Walk in an Etobicoke Park. Members came from Etobicoke, Mississauga and Toronto to enjoy a clear and sunny day (ok, it was a bit chilly), but we were all bundled up and with a clear paved path walking was easy for this intergenerational group. I look forward to the next one and hope more of you will be able to join us at that time. Thank you to John and Brenda Lewsen for leading us and providing wonderful warm apple cider and giant pretzels to end the afternoon.

Last Sunday was the Israeli Market run by Esek. Esek acts as an agent for many small, independent Israeli artisans who, acting on their own, would not be able to reach potential customers outside of the Israeli borders. Esek is bringing samples of their goods to various shuls so that we can all see what they have to offer and help support these individuals. Keeping in mind that what they brought to Solel was just a sampling, you might want to check out their website (Esek.biz) to see all of their offerings, that include: art, candles, jewelry and more. Delivery from Israel is free.

That was what was, here is something to look forward to – Latkes, Latkes and more Latkes. On December 14 there will be a Latke making competition. Do you have a family secret ingredient or technique or topping? David Gordon will provide all of the basic ingredients – shredded potatoes, onions, flour, eggs, baking soda, salt, pepper and the all-important oil, you bring the rest. There are a limited number of frypans available, so book your spot now by contacting Miriam Schoeman (mschoeman@gmail.com) by December 11.

Additionally, David Gordon will also be spearheading our annual congregational latke cooking extravaganza so that every Solelnik will be able to purchase 10 latkes for just $20 by reaching out to the office. If you can join us on December 7, 2025 for all or part of the day (9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) and be part of the day of the frypan, please let Carol in the office know, or reach out to David directly. We appreciate your help. Oh, and don’t forget to place your order!
